Life at sea

What life onboard is actually like

Cabins and balconies

Your own comfortable base, with the position and view that suit you. From cosy interiors to private balconies, the right cabin makes a real difference.

Dining

From relaxed breakfasts to special dinners, there is usually plenty of choice. The style ranges from casual poolside meals to beautifully paced evenings.

Excursions

Join a knowledgeable guide or explore independently at your own pace. I’ll help you understand which experiences are worth booking before you sail.

Pools, spa and wellness

Swim, unwind or book a treatment between ports. These spaces are particularly lovely on sea days, when there is time to enjoy them properly.

Entertainment and evenings

Choose from live music, shows and fascinating talks, or find a quiet bar for a nightcap. Evenings can be as lively or relaxed as you like.

Sea days and downtime

Slow mornings, a good book and time to enjoy the ship itself. With nowhere to rush to, the day can unfold entirely at your pace.

Choosing your cabin

Does deck level matter?

A little. The best choice depends on the ship, your cabin type and how sensitive you are to movement.

Lower decks
Usually a little steadier and often better value. A good choice if you’re budget-conscious or more sensitive to movement.
Mid decks
Often the easiest all-round choice, with convenient access to much of the ship.
Higher decks
Usually chosen for better views and closer access to pools and outdoor spaces, though they can feel a little more movement on some ships.

Choosing your style

River or ocean? Two very different ways to cruise

River cruise

Smaller ships, central docking and easy sightseeing. Best for travellers who want historic cities, culture and a gentler pace.

  • Central docking
  • Fewer guests
  • More destination-focused

Ocean cruise

More choice on board, longer itineraries and the ability to cover much greater distances.

  • More dining and entertainment
  • More cabin choice
  • Sea days and longer routes

Small ship & expedition

Smaller ships, fewer guests and extraordinary journeys to remote coastlines, islands and wildlife-rich places.

  • Access to smaller ports
  • Fewer guests
  • Expedition-led itineraries

A useful guide

What is considered a small ship?

There’s no single definition, but roughly:

50–300 guests

Boutique small ships

100–500 guests

Expedition ships

500–1,000 guests

Small ocean ships

3,000–6,000+ guests

Large mainstream ships

Why choose one? Smaller ships can access ports larger ships can’t, usually feel less crowded and tend to focus more on the destination than onboard facilities.

Looking for something different?

These are just a few examples. I can match the route, ship, cabin and style to the kind of cruise you actually want.
